Two RSNZ medal go to Gravida researchers

December 2014

Congratulations to Associate Professor Peter Dearden and Professor Alastair Gunn who received medals at the 2014 Royal Society of awards dinner.

Gravida deputy director Associate Professor Peter Dearden (University of Otago, Dunedin) was the winner of the 2014 Callaghan Medal Science Communication Award for outstanding contribution to science; this was for his work in a number of initiatives, including honeybee research and Genetics Otago, an organisation that he established and leads.

Gravida researcher Professor Alastair Gunn (University of Auckland, Auckland) was the recipient of the 2014 MacDiarmid Award for outstanding scientific research that demonstrates the potential for application to human benefit.  His research into using a ‘cool cap’ to prevent brain injury in babies who have experienced low oxygen at birth is now the standard of care worldwide.

It is wonderful to see the work of these two exceptional researchers recognised.
